Nick Eccher of Pittsburgh won Newport News’ annual One City Marathon men’s championship Sunday morning by almost five minutes.
Eccher, 31, completed the 26.2-mile citywide course in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 54.27 seconds, according to his chip time published on runsignup.com. That’s a pace of 5:27 per mile. The former Holy Cross rower was 84th in the 2024 Boston Marathon in 2:29:15.
Benjamin Jones, 40, of State College, Pennsylvania, was second Sunday at 2:27:41.44, and former William & Mary distance runner Ryan McCracken, 25, of Richmond was third at 2:37:59.68.
The women’s marathon was far more dramatic, decided by about a half-second at the finish line downtown. Shauneen Werlinger, a 41-year-old from Fairfax Station, won in a chip time 2:44:43.98, a 6:17 mile pace. She was a multi-time NCAA Division III champion runner for Amherst.
Serena Burla, 43, a cancer survivor and former Team USA representative who lives in Stafford, was the runner-up in 2:44:44.50.
Amber Kuszak, 41, of Yorktown won the women’s Masters top medal in 3:03:23.85.
The half-marathon men’s first-place medal went to Aidan Nathan, 22, of Ashburn, by almost a minute. He completed 13.1 miles in 1:06:59.81, a 5:07 mile pace. Second was Joey Datta, 23, of Edison, New Jersey, in 1:07:57.00.
Cleo Boyd, 32, of Charlottesville won top women’s half-marathon honors in 1:13:32.57, 5:37 per mile. Ainsley Pressl, 26, of Baltimore was the runner-up in 1:16:54.02.
In Saturday’s Maritime 5K, Connor Moses of Mechanicsville was the men’s champ by completing 3.1 miles in 15:46.08, a 5:05 pace. Fellow 27-year-old Sam Cohen of Savannah, Georgia, was second in 16:56.62.
Sabrina Zator, 30, of Reston won the women’s 5K division in 17:47.53, followed by Julia Siegel Breton, 42, of Richmond in 18:20.41.
Toby Worm, 42, of Smithfield won the men’s Masters 5K in 18:29.67.
The race is among the top 20 Boston Marathon qualifying events, according to marathonguide.com.
