SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Former state representative Thom Welby, who is running for Lackawanna County Commissioner, took to social media to push back against rumors suggesting he would not serve his full term if elected.

In a strongly worded post, Welby expressed frustration over what he described as “ludicrous suggestions” circulating among supporters of another candidate.

“I am in absolute amazement and a little bit of disgust with the promotion by someone else’s supporters that if elected — I would not serve,” Welby wrote. “Are these people that insane to post such ludicrous suggestions?”

Welby went on to reaffirm his commitment to the position, stating that, if elected, he intends to serve his full term and prioritize the interests of county residents above political alliances.

“If I am elected to serve as Lackawanna County Commissioner — I will clearly serve my full term with the interests of the people as my full purpose — and not committed to another commissioner as my deal,” he said.

Welby concluded his post by questioning the motives behind the claims, asking, “Who would post such a ridiculous suggestion?”

Welby, who previously represented the 113th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, announced his candidacy earlier this year as part of the race to fill the county’s open commissioner seat.

In another post, Welby congratulated newly sworn-in Commissioner Brenda Sacco, who officially took office after months of delays.

Welby wrote, “It’s about time! FINALLY sworn in — after eight months of being blocked — Brenda Sacco, who was appointed to the vacant commissioner’s position by the county judges. Congratulations, Commissioner Sacco! I hope that I am lucky enough to succeed you in this special election November 4th.”
