Troopers launched an investigation after a 51-year-old Laceyville man reported losing $13,500 in an email scam, state police at Tunkhannock said.
During the investigation, troopers determined the victim received a request to send money via bitcoin as reimbursement for a PayPal refund overage, police said.
Out of fear of being held liable for the funds to PayPal, the victim sent the money via a bitcoin kiosk, troopers said.
Trooper Blade Bernosky was assigned to investigate the incident, which occurred Feb. 13 at noon, state police said.
