Every Lehigh Valley-area wrestler who qualified for this weekend’s PIAA Wrestling Championships has only one dream ending to his season: state gold.

But the reality is the road to a podium picture early Saturday night inside Hershey’s Giant Center is through the consolation rounds.

Nothing is harder to accept for many than that first loss at the state tournament, the realization that the dream of winning a championship in the nation’s most respected state for the sport has been shattered.

The challenge of finding a way to win at least two matches to secure a medal is daunting.

The journey for 260 wrestlers in each classification begins Thursday. There will be countless tears shed in the dark corners of the Giant Center in Hershey. There, too, will be many beaming smiles come Saturday.

The fun for those who love the sport comes in watching it all unfold during three long days in early March.

There are three new No. 1s in the next-to-last set of individual rankings thanks to some great regional matches.

There very easily could have been another three or four if not for some late-match heroics in championship bouts.
