Honesdale’s Nathan Schuman and Hanover Area’s CJ Caines can define their seasons with one word — domination.
Saturday proved no different.
The sophomore wrestlers, who have a combined record of 90-1 on the season, captured Class 2A Northeast Regional titles at Williamsport High School, with seven points being the closest margin of victory.
They also both punched their tickets to the PIAA tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday at the Giant Center in Hershey, and will be joined by Mid Valley’s Matthew Almedina (139 pounds), Honesdale’s Duke Martin (189) and Justin Scanlon (133), Hanover Area’s Chase Smith (114), Berwick’s Carmen Malt (121), Blue Ridge’s Brice Woodruff (127) and Western Wayne’s Gavin Morcom (160) as the top four finishers in each weight class qualified for states.
Ranked third in the state at 107 pounds according to PA Power Wrestling, Schuman rolled to a regional title last year, and did it again this year. The Hornets star pinned Troy’s Garret Parks in the first period in the quarterfinals, secured an 18-3 technical fall over North Penn-Liberty’s Bodhi Nickerson (12th in state) in the semifinals and pinned Montoursville’s Branden Eisenhour (fourth in state) in the third period in the final.
Caines, who is undefeated this season and ranked fourth in the state at 127, pinned Williamson’s Hunter Simonds in 2:22 after building a 15-0 lead on him in the quarterfinals. Then, he built a 10-0 lead on Muncy’s Gage Swank (13th in state) in the semifinals before he injury defaulted out of the tournament. Finally, Caines secured a takedown in the first, an escape in the second and four back points in the third for an 8-1 victory over Warrior Run’s Chase Wirnsberger (14th in state) for his first regional title.
Almedina (10th in state) opened Saturday with a 16-1 tech fall over Bloomsburg’s Anthony Barra (21st in state). In the 139 final, the Mid Valley senior built a two-point lead in the third period, but Muncy’s Chase Boozer (eighth in state) benefitted from a stall call and secured a late takedown for a 6-4 victory.
Martin (ninth in state) rolled past Line Mountain’s Cade Feger (20th in state), 22-4, to reach the 189 final, where he lost by 13-2 major decision to Montoursville’s Hayden Harvey (sixth in state).
Scanlon pinned Towanda’s Bryghton Yale in 30 seconds in the consolation semifinals to qualify for states. Honesdale also placed Levi Landry (fifth at 215), Brody Walsh (fifth at 121) and Bobby MacDowell (sixth at 285), as the Hornets placed fourth in the team standings.
After losing his semifinal match, 1-0, to Southern Columbia’s Rowen Humphrey (12th in state), Smith (13th in state) rebounded with a 12-2 major over Midd-West’s Mason Kerstetter in the consolation semifinals for a spot in states.
Malt (26th in state) topped Walsh, 10-5, in the consolation semifinals to qualify for states.
Woodruff (21st in state) pinned Northeast Bradford’s Hunter Comstock in the consolation quarterfinals, and had a forfeit win over Swank in the consolation semifinals. The Blue Ridge senior lost his third-place match to Montgomery’s Carden Wagner in the ultimate tiebreaker.
Morcom (25th in state) responded to a 7-5 loss to Midd-West’s Evan Maneval (18th in state) in the semifinals with a third-period pin of Montoursville’s Blake Fry (27th in state) in the consolation semifinals, as the Western Wayne junior qualified for states for the first time.
