Wintry mix could glaze roads with ice, creating slick commute in south-central Pennsylvania

RESTAURANTS ARE OFFERING SPECIAL DISHES. THIS WEEK, ONLY. NOW, THE WGAL NEWS EIGHT STORM TEAM FORECAST WITH METEOROLOGIST ETHAN HUSTON. GET READY FOR A WINTRY MIX TO MOVE IN LATER TONIGHT AND WILL BE AROUND THROUGHOUT ABOUT THE FIRST HALF OF TOMORROW. LOOKS ABOUT A 12 HOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR SOME SNOW THAT SWITCHES OVER TO A MIX OF SNOW AND FREEZING RAIN, AND EVENTUALLY RAIN, BUT IT’S NOT THE AMOUNT, IT’S THE BAD TIMING. IT’S REALLY GOING TO PUT A DAMPER ON CONDITIONS FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE TOMORROW, SO GIVE YOURSELF EXTRA TIME. SO THAT’S WHY TOMORROW IS AN IMPACT DAY. NOW WE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE VERY ACTIVE WEATHER AS WE GO THROUGH THIS WEEK. NEARLY EVERY DAY COULD AT LEAST FEATURE SOME PASSING SHOWERS, BUT IT’S NOT GOING TO BE A COMPLETE WASHOUT. WE’RE TALKING ROUNDS OF RAIN, AND IT IS ALSO GOING TO BE WARMER ONCE WE GET PAST TOMORROW. WE’RE TALKING HIGHS BACK INTO THE 50S 60S AND EVEN CLOSER TO 70 DEGREES IN THE COMING DAYS. BUT BEFORE THAT, WE’VE GOT TO GET THROUGH TONIGHT AND TOMORROW. WE DO HAVE THAT WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR 12 HOURS FROM 1 A.M. TO 1 P.M., AND I THINK THE WEATHER SERVICE HAS DONE A GOOD JOB HERE WITH THE TIMING. ALL IS QUIET RIGHT NOW. YOU CAN SEE AREAS NORTH OF THE TURNPIKE STILL HAVE SOME BREAKS IN THE CLOUDS, BUT THE CLOUD COVER IS THICK FOR AREAS SOUTH OF THE TURNPIKE. GOT SOME REPORTS OF SOME SNOW IN NORTHERN PORTIONS OF BALTIMORE COUNTY. PERHAPS A LIGHT COATING SOUTH OF THE STATE LINE. BUT THIS IS WHAT WE’RE WATCHING. YOU CAN SEE THE RAIN BUILDING BACK OVER WEST VIRGINIA AND SOUTHERN OHIO. A LITTLE BIT OF SOME FREEZING RAIN. THAT’S THE MOISTURE THAT’S GOING TO BE LIFTING TO THE NORTHEAST LATER TONIGHT. SO WE’RE DRY FOR THIS EVENING. TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE UPPER 20S TO LOWER 30S. IT’S OVERNIGHT TONIGHT AFTER MIDNIGHT. HERE COMES SOME LIGHT SNOW. AND THEN THAT LIGHT SNOW WILL TRANSITION OVER TO SNOW AND EVENTUALLY FREEZING RAIN. BUT WE’RE TALKING A GLAZE OF ICE COULD BE ON THE ROADWAYS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, WITH MORE FREEZING RAIN COMING DOWN. BUT AFTER LUNCHTIME, TEMPERATURES START TO WARM WITH HIGHS BACK INTO THE MID TO UPPER 30S AND IT’S LIKELY JUST GOING TO BE STEADY. PLAIN RAIN DURING THE EVENING COMMUTE. SO HOW MUCH FREEZING RAIN? JUST A LIGHT GLAZE HERE OR THERE ACROSS THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY WHERE REALLY COULD CAUSE SOME ISSUES WILL BE AT ELEVATION. SO WE’RE TALKING SOUTH MOUNTAIN ALONG THE RIDGE TOPS AND ALSO BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES WHERE WE COULD SEE CONDITIONS DETERIORATE BECAUSE THE AIR TEMPERATURE AND THE TEMPERATURE WILL BE CLOSE TO THE SAME IN TERMS OF THE SNOWFALL, JUST ENOUGH TO PUT DOWN A LIGHT COATING. BUT IT’S JUST BAD TIMING. BEST CHANCE FOR SNOW WILL BE LATER TONIGHT AND THROUGH THE MORNING DRIVE TOMORROW, SO THE ROADS START BECOMING SLIPPERY LATER TONIGHT. TOMORROW MORNING IS WHEN WE’LL HAVE SLIPPERY CONDITIONS, ESPECIALLY ON THOSE BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. WE’LL START TO SEE CONDITIONS IMPROVE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENTUALLY DURING THE EVENING. ROADWAYS WILL LIKELY JUST BE WET. MADE IT TO JUST 31 FOR THE HIGH TODAY. THE AVERAGE HIGH NOW IS 46, WELL BELOW THAT. WE’RE STILL DRY, BUT JUST 30 DEGREES RIGHT NOW IN CARLISLE. AIR IS ALSO INCREDIBLY DRY WITH DEW POINT OF 12. SO NOTICE THE TEMPERATURES ACROSS MOST OF THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY. THEY ARE BELOW FREEZING ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA. IN FACT, AS YOU ZOOM ON OUT, YOU CAN SEE THAT POCKET OF BELOW FREEZING AIR ALL THE WAY DOWN TOWARDS D.C. YOU GOT TO GET DOWN TO CHARLOTTESVILLE AND RICHMOND TO SEE TEMPERATURES ABOVE FREEZING. SO WATCH WHAT HAPPENS HERE ON THE PREDICTOR. HERE COMES FIRST THAT SNOW AFTER MIDNIGHT. THE PINK IS MOST LIKELY GOING TO BE THE FORM OF SNOW TO FREEZING RAIN THAT WILL BE OUT THERE FOR THE MORNING COMMUTE. BUT BY THE TIME WE GET TO LUNCHTIME, BULK OF THAT WILL BE SWITCHING OVER TO JUST STEADY RAIN THAT WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE EVENING DRIVE TIME TOMORROW NIGHT AND ALSO ON INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. EVENTUALLY WE’LL START TO SEE SOME BREAKS IN THE RAIN. BY THE TIME WE HEAD INTO WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. BUT LOOK AT THE UPWARD TREND AND TEMPERATURES BACK UP TO 50 DEGREES FOR YOUR WEDNESDAY. CLOSER TO THE 60 BY FRIDAY. I DO BELIEVE FOR THE WEEKEND AHEAD, IT’S PASSING SHOWERS AT TIMES FOR BOTH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, WITH HIGHS IN THE MID 60S. AND THEN HOW ABOUT
