DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — The Greater Scranton YMCA is collecting new and gently used books this week as part of its annual book drive tied to Read Across America Week.
The drive runs through Friday. Donations can be dropped off at the YMCA Welcome Center at 706 N. Blakely St. in Dunmore.
Colleen Burns Ecklund, director of marketing and development for the Greater Scranton YMCA, said the drive is meant to help children find stories that build early literacy and a love of reading.
“Book drives are important to our community because they give every child the opportunity to find a story that sparks their love of learning and their imagination early on. Growing up, reading was one of my favorite activities and still is. It’s important for children to be exposed to that and have the opportunity to find the book they love,” said Burns Ecklund.
Burns Ecklund added that the book drive will primarily support young readers in the YMCA’s Early Learning Center, which serves children from infants through age 5. She said the YMCA also has afterschool and summer programs that generally serve children ages 4 through 12.
Donated books will be distributed to early learning centers in Dunmore and Olyphant. The YMCA is accepting books for all ages including adults to benefit members.
Drop-offs can be made during business hours: Monday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
