The Erie Zoo opened on March 1, and visitors wasted no time flocking back to see their favorite animals.

For the people who make it all happen and the families that walk through the gates, opening day isn’t just a date on the calendar.

“It’s kind of the beginning of spring for us here at the zoo, and it brings people back to the park, brings some energy back to the park. The animals look forward to it, and even some of our staff do as well,” said Scott Mitchell, the development director at the Erie Zoo.

“A lot of places don’t have a zoo. To have a zoo is really, in your town, that just seems really neat,” said Michael Freeman, a visitor.

Guests and staff alike said that it’s more than just a place to see the animals; it means something to the community.

With the 2026 season kicking off, Mitchell revealed some exciting new additions to the Erie Zoo.

“We’ve got a new Visayan Warty Pig who’s a handsome boy, his name is Ernie, and then we have a new male kangaroo as well, so we’re excited,” said Mitchell.

A highlight for many people at the zoo is seeing the reactions and excitement that fill the walkways in the park.

“Just to see guests again, and to hear kids giggle and laugh and enjoy themselves, that’s just what it’s all about,” said Mitchell.

“I like to watch the little kids and see what they like, and see which ones they like the best,” said Freeman.

With all the events and activities planned for this year, officials at the zoo said they’re ready for a fun-filled season.

The Erie Zoo’s opening day celebration will take place on March 7 at 10 a.m.
