READING, Pa. – If you’re observing Lent and skipping meat on Fridays, there’s a delicious option that ties in homemade pierogies, a fish fry, and helping great causes in Berks County.

69 News Reporter Sydney Kay was in Reading with a preview of the tasty tradition and the groups behind it.

The “‘All You Care to Eat Lenten Meal” event at the Nativity BVM Ukrainian Catholic Church will take place on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Mike Weil, Executive Director of Daily Operations of the Veteran’s Coalition of Pennsylvania, said the event brings people “under one roof to break bread.” Haddock, salmon, shrimp, baked ziti, and salad are among the tasty food items offered.

“We really go all out,” he said.

People from the church make handmade pierogies in preparation for the meal.

Rotary Club of Spring Township President Tom McDonald said people from his organization and the church donate items for a raffle held during the event.

Proceeds from the raffle will help go towards funding clothing for veterans and will help the Rotary Club get scholarships for kids. The funds raised will also help the church run its daily activities.

Weil said his organization works with the Veteran’s Affairs office and other groups such as the Hope Rescue Mission and Opportunity House to help veterans.

“These guys deserve whatever we can do for them,” he said.
