2 ice fishermen rescued after being stranded on Lake Erie

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two ice fishermen were rescued Sunday night after a sheet of ice on Lake Erie separated and floated a mile offshore, the Erie County Sheriff’s office said.

The U.S. Coast Guard requested assistance with a search and rescue operation around 6:30 p.m. Sunday following reports of a fisherman unable to return to shore. The pair were found using infrared technology and one of them was rescued on a skiff rescue boat.

Air 1 assisted in the rescue of the second ice fisherman, who was treated by fire officials at Sturgeon Point Marina.
