Fatal crash on Liberty Bridge claims life of local woman, 2 others seriously hurt

  • March 4, 2026

A three-vehicle crash on the Liberty Bridge early Sunday morning resulted in the death of 25-year-old Laila Jones from Baldwin, police said. Two others remain in critical condition as Pittsburgh police continue their investigation into the cause of the crash. The deadly crash occurred on the south end of the bridge, not far from the Liberty Tunnel. Jones was killed at the scene, and another man and woman were pulled from the car and remain in critical condition. Christie Ford, a friend of Jones, shared that the other woman in the car was her close friend and Jones’ lifelong friend, Madison Rau. Rau was one of the two people first responders were able to pull from the car after being pinned inside, and she was seriously injured. “She’s in a lot of pain, and she’s going to have a lot of physical and mental challenges ahead,” Ford said.Ford said Jones and Rau are lifelong friends.”Maddie and Laila are like two peas in a pod. Both of them are always together. Where you see one, the other is,” Ford said. “Thinking about both of their children and the long road ahead that both of them and the families are going to have. It’s really hard. My heart breaks for them.”A man was also in their car and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another person involved, who was in a separate car, was taken to the hospital and was stable. The cause of the crash is unclear at this point, but police are investigating.Ford started a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral costs and support Jones’ young son. “I expressed to her (grandmother) that I would do whatever I could to help the family. And I thought that it was right to at least try to support them in this unexpected tragedy and help them with funeral costs and lifelong care for Karter, her son,” Ford said. She also started a GoFundMe to help cover Rau’s medical expenses and to support her young son while she recovers. “She’s definitely going to need help with some care. So family will be around and things like that, but I just think that it will probably be a long, long time before Maddie is able to return to work,” Ford said. PITTSBURGH —

“She’s in a lot of pain, and she’s going to have a lot of physical and mental challenges ahead,” Ford said.

Ford said Jones and Rau are lifelong friends.

“Maddie and Laila are like two peas in a pod. Both of them are always together. Where you see one, the other is,” Ford said. “Thinking about both of their children and the long road ahead that both of them and the families are going to have. It’s really hard. My heart breaks for them.”

A man was also in their car and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Another person involved, who was in a separate car, was taken to the hospital and was stable. The cause of the crash is unclear at this point, but police are investigating.

Ford started a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral costs and support Jones’ young son.
