MERCER COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — With St. Patrick’s Day approaching this weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and law enforcement across the state are teaming up to launch a special impaired driving campaign, named “Operation Sober Shamrock”, running from March 5 to March 7.

The campaign is part of a larger “St. Patrick’s Day Impaired Driving Enforcement” effort that runs from March 7 to March 17.

During this time, law enforcement will be conducting roving DUI patrols and increased enforcement activities in an effort to curb the number of impaired driving crashes, injuries and fatalities.

The decision was announced Tuesday at the Hermitage Police Department in Mercer County. More than a dozen police departments across western Pennsylvania will also participate, as grantees of PennDOT’s Municipal Police Traffic Services Program.

PennDOT and law enforcement hope that enforcement campaigns, such as this, and sustained education programs will help inform the public on state driving laws and the consequences of impaired driving.
