Fresh off winning her fourth straight regional title, Reading High senior Esmeralda Tellez heads to Hershey for the PIAA Wrestling Championships with a perfect record this season.

Tellez is 30-0 at 190 pounds after winning the South Central Regional and already has two state medals in her trophy case. She was fifth in the weight class last season and third the year before.

She will face Taylor Stewart of Mifflinburg in the first round on Thursday. Defending champion Caroline Hattala of Quakertown (35-1) is in the opposite side of the bracket and they would meet in the final if they each win their first three matches.

Tellez’s closest match of the season was a 3-0 win over Souderton junior MacKenna Atkinson on Jan. 3. Atkinson was second to Hattala in the regional and on the same side of the bracket as Tellez. If they each win their first two matches, they would meet in the semifinals.

There are six other Berks girls in the tournament, including Berks Catholic freshman Kimberly Munoz who won the regional title at 142 pounds.

Munoz is 40-1 in her rookie season and opens up the state tourney against Downingtown West freshman Avery Dunn who was fourth in the Southeast Regional.

At 118 pounds, Gov. Mifflin freshman Gianna Montegari (27-4) was second in the regional and will face Athens junior Joyce Clink in the first round.

At 124, Gov. Mifflin senior Emily Yerger (28-7) was fourth in the regional and meets top-seeded Neve O’Byrne, a sophomore from Garnet Valley who is 28-0, in the first round.

Wyomissing’s Julionna Loux, a junior who is 26-2 at 148, finished third in the regional and meets William Tennent senior Meghan Gottschall in the first round. Also at 148, Wilson senior Tammy Nguyen (30-4) was fourth in the regional and wrestles Sun Valley junior Jameson Strickland, the Southeast Regional champ, in the first round.

Hamburg’s Daisy Nemes (30-6) was fourth at 155 in the regional will wrestle Emmaus senior Olivya Kroope (33-1), the Southeast Regional champion, in the opening round.

The first round is Thursday at 2 p.m. with the quarterfinals at 11:45 a.m. Friday. The semifinals are Friday at 7 p.m. with the championship finals at 4 p.m. Saturday.
