READING, Pa. – A state lawmaker delivered a big gift to the LGBT Center of Greater Reading Wednesday.

Democratic state Rep. Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, who represents Berks County, presented the center with a $50,000 state grant.

The funding will help the center continue to offer counseling and mental health support, as well as host community events. The boost comes as the center grapples with the loss of federal funding.

“We have not had to reduce our services, but we have significantly reduced our staff to survive,” said Laura Biancone, executive director of the center. “So we’re spread real thin doing a lot of things and wearing a lot of hats.”

The center works to create a welcoming and safe environment for LGBTQ community members and allies in the region.
