An investigation is underway after prosecutors said human remains were discovered in a wooded area in Cape May County, New Jersey.

According to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, on March 3, 2026, a county resident was walking in a wooded area in the Whitesboro section of Middle Township and discovered what appeared to be a human skull.

Prosecutors said following the report, investigators conducted a coordinated search of the surrounding area.

As a result of that search, prosecutors said skeletal remains believed to be those of an adult were located and recovered.

At this time, a positive identification has not been made, and an investigation remains ongoing, prosecutors shared.

Prosecutors explained that additional information will be released as it becomes available and that there is no threat to the public at this time.
