OBITUARY

Dorothy Elizabeth Lilly Murray, 84, Scranton, PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, surrounded by her family at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab, where she resided for the past 7 years. Born August 1, 1941, and raised in West Scranton, the daughter of the late John and Dorothy Leidinger Lilly, Dorothy was a graduate of St. Ann’s High School Class of 1959. She was then certified as an X-Ray technician and spent the next 35+ years at Professional Orthopedic Associates Ltd. It is here that she gained her incredible work family.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband, children and grandchildren. Dorothy (aka Doro, Dotti, or Lil) especially loved trips to State College for Penn State Football Weekends, countless family trips to Walt Disney World and Myrtle Beach. She and Joe traveled to San Francisco, Boston and traded some cold Pennsylvania winters for Sarasota Sunshine with Carol and Bob. She loved her casino trips with her sisters Mary Ann and Kathy. She enjoyed going to Broadway shows and various musical performances in NYC and in Scranton. She truly loved just being with her family and friends whether it was shopping or meeting for a bite to eat.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she gave all of herself to her family through her great work ethic, generosity, compassion and most of all, her love. She truly had the biggest heart ever and shared it with so many. What she enjoyed more than anything was time with her grandchildren and spoiling them with hugs, snuggles, back scratches, and hummabyes. She attended every sporting event, concert, recital, musical, art show, you name it, she was there. Her legacy and love of family will live on for generations to come.

Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Joseph F. Murray, Jr., and their three children, Joseph F. Murray, III, New York City; Jennifer Murray Aebli and her husband Fred , Scranton; Stephen Murray and his wife Michele, Scotch Plains, NJ; seven grandchildren: Jordan Aebli Yagelski and her husband Ryan, Jillian and Jake Aebli, Matthew, Kayla, Jack and Emma Murray; great-grandchildren: Graham and Piper Yagelski; her brother, Robert Lilly, Carbondale; her brother-in-law, Paul Weir, CT, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Dorothy was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Ann Donovan and Kathleen Weir, and her brother, John Lilly.

Dorothy’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the incredible staff at Elan Skilled Nursing and Rehab for the amazing care they provided for the past 7 years. She was loved, treated with respect and dignity. They gave her a home away from home. Also, a sincere thank you to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, for providing her with grace, peace, and love until her last breath.
