SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Criminal charges have been filed as Scranton police continue investigating the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy late last year on the city’s west side.

Officers were called to 1337 Bryn Mawr Street on the evening of December 12 for a report of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Dylan Smith, 16, of Taylor, suffering from a gunshot wound. Patrol officers immediately began life-saving measures before Smith was transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he later died.

Investigators later determined the firearm involved had been reported stolen roughly two weeks earlier in Archbald Borough. Three juveniles were interviewed the night of the shooting, and one was taken into custody on a felony charge of possession of a firearm by a minor.

In an update released Friday, Scranton police said detectives filed additional charges on February 26 stemming from the ongoing investigation.

Mariah Cortes, 24, of Duryea, is charged with six counts of furnishing alcohol to minors. Police said she will receive a summons by mail through the office of Magisterial District Judge Gallagher.

Two juvenile males are also facing charges filed through Lackawanna County Juvenile Probation. Authorities said those charges include possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property and possession of alcoholic beverages.

Police emphasized the investigation remains active, and additional charges could be filed pending further review of the evidence.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Scranton police detectives through the department’s tip line or by calling headquarters.
