Starting Monday, the state Department of Transportation and Scranton will close two North Scranton neighborhood streets — Marvine Avenue and Wells Street — to through-traffic near where North Main Avenue remains closed in the 2700 block for replacement of a bridge over Leggetts Creek.
Marvine Avenue and Wells Street will close to through-traffic due to safety concerns, PennDOT said in an announcement Friday.
Many vehicles traveling on busy North Main Avenue have been using the narrower, Marvine Avenue and Wells Street as detours to get around the part of North Main Avenue closed for bridge construction.
PennDOT said residents who live in the area of Marvine Avenue and Wells Street will still have vehicle access to their homes from North Main Avenue; while pedestrians also can continue to use Marvine Avenue and Wells Street for the pedestrian detour route.
Other drivers using North Main Avenue should follow the signed detour routes to get around the road closure.
The signed detour route coming from the west is Parker Street to Boulevard Avenue into Dickson City to Main Street at Dickson Corners near NBT Bank. The detour from Dickson City is from Main Street to Boulevard Avenue into Scranton, to Parker Street to North Main Avenue.
The truck detour is Interstate 81 to the North Scranton Expressway.
The 2700 block of North Main Avenue in North Scranton closed to traffic on Jan. 20 for a year-long, $6.4 million bridge replacement project. Officials expect the closure of North Main Avenue here to last through the winter of 2026-27.
