Temporary Closure of Serpentine Drive Starting Monday for Restoration Project

Pittsburgh, PA – The Serpentine Drive Wall Restoration Project in Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park is preparing to enter the next stage of construction. Beginning on Monday, March 9, there will be a full closure for cyclists and pedestrians on Serpentine Drive from E. Circuit Road to Bartlett Street as crews regrade and resurface the surrounding road. The work is expected to last around a month, going through April 13, depending on weather.

In summer 2019, an 80-foot section of the Serpentine Drive wall failed. After the failure, roughly 200 feet of additional wall was visibly unstable with loose, missing and deteriorated stones with large holes through the wall at the roadway gutter line.

Restoration began in summer 2025 with the repair and reconstruction of approximately 265 feet of the existing masonry wall along Serpentine Drive with drainage improvements along the gutter line. The restored section was designed to preserve the historic character of the original structure, using replicated stone masonry and capstones along the top of the wall. Crews also reused salvaged stone from the original wall on the roadway-facing side, helping the new construction blend seamlessly with the remaining historic sections.

Once the resurfacing is completed over the next month, a shared-used pathway will be re-established until the project’s expected completion in the spring of 2026.

“Repairing Serpentine Drive is not just another project for the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure,” said Jeff Skalican, Acting Director of DOMI. “It’s a commitment to Pittsburghers to preserve what makes our great City beautiful while building safe infrastructure to last generations.”

The Serpentine Drive Wall Restoration Project is being constructed by Merante Construction and managed by DOMI.
