Union City Elementary School wrapped up its third annual Masked Reader program today as part of Read Across America Week.
Each day this week, faculty members recorded videos of themselves reading stories while wearing different character masks. Classrooms watched the videos daily and tried to guess which staff member was behind each mask. Today, students finally learned the identities of the mystery readers.
Teachers, custodians and bus drivers all took part in the program, which is designed to get students excited about reading.
“They love it. They were excited the whole time,” said Bailey Pituch, Union City Elementary, Community School Director. “Once it hits 7:55 a.m. in the hallways, you can hear kids saying, ‘It’s time to do Masked Reader. Get in here, stop messing around in your cubbies. We need to go.’”
The school has put all the books featured in the videos on display in the library to encourage students to check them out and keep reading.
