A 71-year-old woman was fatally struck by an SUV Friday afternoon in front of the Walmart-anchored shopping center in Wyomissing, police said.
Eugenia Polonski of Reading was pronounced dead in Reading Hospital shortly after the 1:15 p.m. accident at the State Hill Road entrance of Berkshire Square shopping center, Wyomissing police Chief John G. Phillips said in a press release.
According to police:
Officers responded to the report of a pedestrian accident. They learned Polonski was struck by an SUV driven by Margo Lemke, 60, of Molina, Ill.. Polonski was taken by ambulance to Reading Hospital, where a staff doctor pronounced her dead.
A Pennsylvania State Police accident reconstruction team was called in to assist Wyomissing police with the investigation. State HIll Road was closed between Berkshire Boulevard and Colony Drive until about 4 p.m. while the investigation was taking place.
After consulting with the Berks County district attorney’s office, Wyomissing police cited Lemke under the section of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code titled “Duties at Stop Signs.” Accident details were unavailable.
Molina was taken before District Judge David Yoch, where she pleaded guilty to the offense.
Wyomissing police were assisted by West Reading and Spring Township police departments and the Wyomissing and Spring fire departments as well as fire police from several jurisdictions.
“The Wyomissing Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community and encourages everyone to remain vigilant while either walking or driving upon the roadways,” Phillips said in the release.
