SCRANTON, Pa. — In this week’s 16 To The Rescue, we meet a 3-year-old cat who has only been at the shelter for a month, but rescue workers want to see her get adopted fast.Â
“Catra is looking for her third and hopefully forever home in three years. It’s through no fault of her own, she’s a very sweet cat, she is just terrified of other animals,” said Katrina Organ, St. Cats and Dogs of Nay Aug Zoo.Â
And of course, a shelter setting is surrounded by them, so that is why rescue workers at St. Cats and Dogs of Nay Aug Zoo in Scranton wanted to feature Catra for this week’s 16 To The Rescue. Her first family adored her, but they had other pets in the home.
“And they tried very hard to make it work with her, she was just not happy, not thriving, having medical issues. It was not the right home for her,” Organ said.Â
So Catra’s first family made the difficult decision to re-home her in a place they knew she’d be happier, and they were right. That was an elderly woman who lived alone in a quiet home. Catra was an entirely different cat there, living her best life.Â
“Then, unfortunately, that owner has had medical issues and is no longer able to live independently, so that’s how she ended up with us,” Organ explained.Â
So that’s the kind of home Catra should go to – quiet, probably no kids, and definitely no other animals. Rescue workers wanted to show Catra in her cage because it is where she is most comfortable. Especially if treats and pets from humans are involved.Â
“She is not like a super playful, active cat. She’s a little on the chubby side, to be honest. She would be a great lap cat, a couple or a single person who works, or an older person who is looking for a companion, just a quieter home,” Organ said.Â
And despite how much of a scaredy-cat she is, Catra actually didn’t mind the camera at all, probably because there was a human on the other side of it. Rescue workers say that shows how much of a lover Catra is.Â
“You know this is a difficult environment for cats that don’t do well with other animals because they’re surrounded by them, it’s a lot of strange smells. And even with all that, she’s so sweet when you open her cage, she just wants pets, she just wants somebody to give her attention, so she’s definitely a sweetheart,” Organ said.Â

St. Cats and Dogs of Nay Aug Zoo is hosting its annual Pet Photos with the Easter Bunny fundraiser this weekend. The Easter Bunny will be at the shelter in Scranton on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a photographer and and instant print of your photo. Any and all pets are welcome.Â
“A lot of folks like coming to us for Santa and Easter pictures because it is a contained space. We empty one of our stalls, you’ll be able to take your leash off of your dog, or take your cat out of the carrier knowing that they’re in a secure space,” Organ said.Â
It will cost $10 for one print or $15 for two.Â
“It is one of the things that we use to maintain the very expensive cost as we approach the start of kitten season, unfortunately, already. It gives us a little bit of a boost to start preparing for that season. It is not a day when we are open for adoptions or to look at cats because all of our volunteers are focused on getting great photos for the folks who come in,” Organ said.Â
You can schedule a time by clicking here, but walk-ins are also welcome.Â
