Eastern Regional Mon Valley Police charged an East Pittsburgh woman with aggravated assault after she was caught on camera hitting a child on a school bus last Thursday. “He’s been having nightmares. He’s scared to get on the bus,” said Jamar Gee, the victim’s father. “He always says, ‘Dad, what are you going to do if the lady comes and gets me again?'”According to a criminal complaint, Shemekia Guyton boarded the school bus at the corner of Bessemer Avenue and Main Street, despite being told by the driver multiple times to exit. Guyton allegedly made her way to the back of the bus, took off her shoe, and started hitting the third grader on his head and body before she exited the bus with her child. Gee provided Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 with cell phone video of the incident, taken from inside the bus. “I don’t know the lady. I haven’t seen her at the bus stop before,” Gee told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 Reporter Jordan Cioppa. “I just don’t understand how, even if her son gets on the bus, why a bus driver would let a lady get on the bus, walk all the way to the back of the bus and assault a child.”The complaint states the bus driver reported the incident to the Woodland Hills School District transportation director, who notified the head of safety and security. Gee said he found out about the incident the next day from his son’s principal at Edgewood Elementary. He said measures should have been in place to keep his son with special needs safe. “We’re just going to stand tall and fight, you know, for my son and his rights,” Gee said. “This is just something that bothers me that a child with special needs is not being protected the way he is supposed to be protected.”Gee said he is seeking legal counsel. The child was evaluated at the hospital, where it was determined he did not suffer from physical injuries, but he did complain of headaches after the incident, according to Gee. In addition to the felony charge, Guyton also faced three misdemeanor charges, including simple assault, disorderly conduct, and unauthorized school bus entry. As of Friday afternoon, she had not been arrested. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reached out to a spokesperson for the Woodland Hills School District. We are waiting to hear back.
