Police have charged three additional people in connection with a fatal shooting in December in West Scranton, the Police Department said in a news release.

On Dec. 12, police found Dylan Smith, 16, with a gunshot wound at a home in the 1300 block of Bryn Mawr Street, Scranton.

Officers began lifesaving measures before transporting Smith by ambulance to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he died. On Jan. 14, police charged James Barbarino, 19, of Dickson City, with selling an AR-15 rifle used in the shooting to a juvenile weeks before.

Now, police have charged Mariah Cortes, 24, of Duryea, with six counts of furnishing alcohol to minors in connection with the death.

Additionally, two juveniles were recently charged with possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property and possession of alcoholic beverages also related to the death. Police have not released the identities of the juveniles.

“This remains an ongoing investigation with other charges remaining, pending the results of further investigation,” the release concluded.

Barbarino faces felony charges of transferring a firearm to a minor, criminal use of a cellphone and theft. On Feb. 17, he waived his preliminary hearing and his charges were transferred to Lackawanna County Court. He’s free on $25,000 bail.

Cortes’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 6 before District Judge Sean Gallagher.
