Amanda Dempsey connected on three of her four 3-pointers in the second quarter and finished with 14 points, leading Dunmore to a 36-33 win over Mount Carmel on Friday night in the PIAA Class 3A girls basketball first round.
Jackie Brown added seven points, and Janaya Martin, the hero of the District 2 championship game, added six points, including four in the fourth quarter, for the Lady Bucks.
Dunmore (23-3) advances to Tuesday’s second round and will play Executive Education (18-7), the District 11 champion, at a site and time to be determined.
Dempsey scored nine points, all on 3-pointers, in the second quarter when Dunmore overcame a first-quarter deficit. Brown scored three points, and Leena Conte added two as the Lady Bucks built a 23-15 lead.
Dunmore scored only five points in the third, and Mount Carmel (16-10) clawed its way back into the game as Tessa Fourspring scored four points and Arianna Adams had a 3-pointer to close to within 28-26.
Martin, who made a late-game 3-pointer in the district final win over Holy Redeemer, scored four points in the fourth and the Lady Bucks’ defense limited Mount Carmel to seven.
Class 2A
Addison Kilmer continued her outstanding career in the PIAA playoffs by scoring 23 points and leading Mountain View to a 50-44 win over Northwest Area in a Class 2A first-round game at Lakeland High School.
Mountain View (20-6), the District 2 Class 2A champion, advances to the second round on Tuesday and will play Faith Christian, the District 1 champion, which defeated Paul Robeson, 59-15. The Lady Eagles have won the first-round game in the state tournament in each of Kilmer’s four varsity seasons.
Aubrey Sanders scored all eight of her points in the first half as Mountain View built a 23-18 lead.
Kilmer, who had nine points in the first half, scored seven in the third quarter, and the Lady Eagles extended their lead to 39-26. Dazlyn Sobol scored four points in the third for Mountain View.
In the fourth, the Lady Eagles staved off Northwest Area. Kilmer scored seven points, and Emma Thatcher made her third 3-pointer of the game to finish with nine points.
Northwest Area (20-7) rallied in the fourth quarter.
Natalia Ninotti and Hartley Crawford each had 3-pointers, and Ashlyn Hermoanofski scored four points to outscore the Lady Eagles, 18-11, but it wasn’t enough.
Ali Miner led Northwest Area with 10 points, and Hermoanofski finished with nine.
Class 6A
Bekah Sedora scored 25 points, leading Red Lion to a 49-34 win over Scranton in the first round of the PIAA Class 6A girls basketball tournament on Friday night.
Red Lion (23-3), the fourth-place team from District 3, advances to play District 11 champion Easton (26-3) in Tuesday’s second round.
Scranton’s season ends with an 11-14 record.
Bekah Sedora scored 10 points in the second quarter and closed with eight in the fourth for Red Lion. Julia Sedora scored 10 of her 12 points in the first three quarters.
Kendall Williams contributed nine points for the winners.
Chrissy Jacklinski scored 17 points and Jaelyn Alers added eight points to lead Scranton.
