PHILADELPHIA – Weatherly’s second-half run wasn’t enough in a 43-33 loss to Motivation in the opening round of the PIAA Class A girls’ basketball tournament, Saturday, at Lincoln High School.

The Lady Wreckers (8-17) trailed 14-5 after one quarter and 25-13 at halftime, before using a 12-7 third-quarter advantage to pull within seven. However, the locals didn’t make an even deeper dent in the Motivation lead the rest of the way and saw their season end.

Senior guard Joyce Cassell paced the District 12 champion-Jaguars (12-4) with 15 points, including five in the second quarter and six in the fourth. Sophomore Taylor Mathey added 12 points; Joy Cassell, Joyce’s twin sister, wound up with six and forward Kynai Tindell chipped in six.

For District 11 runnerup Weatherly, Kelly Reiner capped her fine career with 17 points. Five came in both the first and second quarters as her 10 kept her team relatively close. Freshman Maci Kane contributed 10 points and Alize Way-Heffner helped with four.

Motivation will face Lourdes Regional in a second-round game on Wednesday at a time and site to be announced.
