A woman was killed in an early morning house fire, authorities announced on Tuesday, March 3.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the 2700 block of Bellview Drive  in Bensalem Township around 2:45 a.m. for a reported residential fire, Bensalem Police said.

Officers and firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the home. A man who lived at the residence was outside and told first responders that a woman was still inside, according to police.

Firefighters entered through the front door under heavy smoke conditions and found an unconscious woman in the kitchen area, authorities said. She was pulled from the home and turned over to EMS crews.

Despite life-saving efforts, the woman, identified as 56-year-old Christine Toal, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The male resident was taken to Jefferson Torresdale Hospital for evaluation and treatment, authorities said.

Fire crews were able to contain and extinguish the blaze before it spread to neighboring homes. No public safety personnel were injured.

Battalion Chief Nicholas Altomare and Bensalem Township Police detectives are conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the fire. The investigation remains active and ongoing, police said.
