Delaware Valley utilized their hurry-up offense extensively to get out to a big early lead, invoking the mercy rule right at halftime, and the Warriors defeated Scranton 49-19 at Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium. Delaware Valley RB Mike Iuzzolino had 2 rushing TD’s, RB Devin Estevez had 2 rushing TD’s and QB Colin McGarvey ran for a score and threw another TD to TE James Dabney. Scranton got 3 passing TD’s from QB Brody Coyle.
Delaware Valley’s defense got a big stop early and then went right to the hurry-up offense. Their first offensive drive was capped bv a 5-yard run from RB Mike Iuzzolino, and Delaware Valley took a 7-0 lead with 10:28 left in the 1st quarter. Getting another stop on defense, the Warrior offense struck quickly again when QB Colin McGarvey hit on a 3-yard keeper and Delaware Valley went up 14-0 with 6:06 left in the 1st quarter. The Warriors struck quickly again on their next possession as RB Devin Estevez hit paydirt on a 5-yard run which increased the Warrior lead to 21-0 with 3:56 to go in the 1st quarter. Iuzzolino then scored again, this time on a nice 26-yard run to give Delaware Valley a 28-0 lead with only 9 seconds left in the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter started very much like the 1st as the Warriors scored quickly again. Estevez hit on a 4-yard run to give Delaware Valley a 35-0 lead with 10:28 left in the half. Scranton was able to get something going on their next drive and they got on the board when QB Brody Coyle threw it to WR Ben Campbell for a nice 32-yard score, and it was 35-6 with 3:44 left in the half. Delaware Valley then went to the hurry-up again, and they capped another scoring drive when McGarvey hit TE James Dabney for a 27-yard TD that made it 42-6 with 1:55 to go before the half. Scranton tried to mount a scoring drive before halftime, but disaster struck when a fumble was scooped up by DB Lucas Purdon who then ran it back 37 yards (unofficially) for the score as the half expired. Delaware Valley increased their lead to 49-6 at the half, invoking the mercy rule and instituting a running clock for the 2nd half.
Delaware Valley put their backups into the game, and Scranton took advantage as they forced 3 turnovers in the 2nd half. The Knights got points off their first forced turnover when Coyle hit Campbell again on a 33-yard TD pass that made it 49-13 with 8:52 left in the 3rd. Scranton got one more score off of a turnover later in the quarter when Coyle hit WR Kamani Sterling for a 36-yard score to make it 49-19, and that was how this one ended.
Delaware Valley ended their regular season improving to 5-5, while Scranton ended their regular season falling to 2-8. The Warriors await their playoff assignment, while the Knights will head on the road to face Williamsport in the Class 6A sub-regional playoff next week.
