A 3-year-old Siberian Husky named Elmer was safely rescued from icy waters after getting trapped under a boathouse on Sandusky Bay, according to officials.

SANDUSKY, Ohio — A 3-year-old Siberian Husky named Elmer was rescued Saturday morning after becoming trapped under the wooden planks of a boat house surrounded by icy waters on Sandusky Bay.

Around 10 a.m. on March 7, Erie County Deputy Dog Warden Stephanie Stanley, with the assistance of Sandusky Police Sgt. Eric Costante and Officer Lisa Lenthe were able to reach the dog.

Stanley was lowered into a kayak to access the boathouse and successfully brought Elmer to safety, according to Erie County Dog Warden Barb Knapp.

“She did a really good job,” Knapp said of Stanley. “She didn’t hesitate to help and got Elmer before he got hurt.”

Knapp said Elmer had been in the Erie County Dog Pound for about two months and was recently placed in a foster home. The dog managed to get loose and became stuck in the boathouse.

Elmer is now back at the Erie County Dog Pound and is looking for a foster or adoptive home.
