Human remains believed to be a missing Bethlehem man have been found in Monroe County, according to authorities.

Matthew Thompson, 43, went missing in mid-February. The remains were found Sunday in the area of Mount Pocono Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facility, according to Bethlehem police. While the investigation is still ongoing, investigators noted that preliminary observations did not show “any clear or apparent signs of foul play.”

The department was contacted about Thompson Feb. 15 when his wife reported that he had not been seen in two days.

Thompson drove to Tobyhanna that day to complete a real estate transaction to prepare for a move. On that afternoon, he stopped communicating with his cellphone, police said in a news release.

His vehicle was towed from a private road that night, and Thompson had requested an Uber ride, but he left the area before the Uber arrived. Thompson was seen on surveillance cameras in the first block of Fork Street in Mount Pocono. That was the last time he was seen, police said.

Bethlehem police said investigators checked hospitals, correctional facilities and with other local law enforcement agencies within hours of getting the missing persons report. Investigators initially believed that there was a “significant possibility” that Thompson may have died before the report was even filed.

Detectives think the recovery of his remains could provide additional information on what happened the night he went missing. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
