One man is dead following standoff in New Philadelphia that shut down Route 209 from Port Carbon to Middleport for over four hours Monday.

State Trooper Ethan Brownback confirmed that a heavy police presence was drawn to the residence at 83 Valley St. shortly after 10 a.m. Monday morning when reports of a domestic violence incident were received by Frackville State Police.

Brownback says that, upon arriving on scene and entering the residence, troopers were fired at by a white Hispanic male. They were able to safely exit the house and secure a perimeter.

What followed was a nearly four-hour-long standoff as law enforcement attempted to draw the suspect out of the residence and take him into custody.

“State Police then contacted our SERT team, who responded to the scene,” Brownback said. “Local municipality police departments and fire police were also dispatched and assisted with this incident, as well.”

An armored car arrive around 12:30 p.m. with a Special Emergency Response Team. State Police helicopters and drones could be seen flying overhead.

The incident resolved around 2 p.m., after law enforcement shot into the house multiple times and entered the residence.

The suspect, who’s name has not yet been released, was found dead inside the house due to an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. There was no one else in the house at the time.

Local residents were advised to stay inside and drivers were told to avoid the area and pursue alternative driving routes.

Brownback says that this was an isolated and contained incident and that there is no threat to the public at this time.
