Two power programs of the Lackawanna League, Scranton Prep and Valley View, are into the second round of the PIAA Class 4A boys basketball postseason.
Both are on the road Tuesday night, hoping to keep their playoff dreams alive.
Valley View (20-6), the third-place team from District 2, plays defending PIAA Class 4A champion Devon Prep (6-18) at 6 p.m. at William Allen High School. It is a rematch of last season’s state semifinal that Devon Prep won, 64-44.
Scranton Prep (21-5), the District 2 champion, plays Salisbury, the third-place team from District 11, at Pleasant Valley High School at 7:30 p.m.
If Valley View and Scranton Prep are successful and advance, they would meet in the state quarterfinals Friday.
Valley View won a first-round game in the state tournament for the sixth straight time it has appeared in the tournament. Junior guard Michael Muto scored 20 points, Jagger Roe had 15, and Noah Symuleski added 12 for the Cougars in a 58-44 win over Montoursville.
“I am looking forward to it,” said Muto, who was mostly a junior varsity player last season. “Not playing a lot last season, but seeing the team go out there and fight against them, it hurt losing. We knew it was going to take a lot of work to get back here this year. This is a big game, and we have to prepare and do the work in practice to get ready.
“We know that if we played together, we could compete. We have great chemistry.”
Valley View won four of its last five since enduring a three-game losing streak late in the Lackawanna Division I season. The Cougars are 3-1 since the return of sophomore center Cash Roe, who suffered an injury to his wrist after a 57-54 loss to Scranton Prep on Feb. 2.
Devon Prep, led by coach Jason Fisher — a University of Scranton Hall of Fame basketball player and two-time MAC Freedom League scoring champion — is the two-time defending PIAA Class 4A champion.
This season, Devon Prep started with four straight losses, which included a 73-58 setback to Scranton Prep and a loss to Abington Heights, 54-49.
Owen Raymond scored 14 points against Scranton Prep and Abington Heights.
Scranton Prep won a first-round state game for the third straight season. The Cavaliers defeated Schuylkill Valley, 65-48.
Packy Doherty, a senior, scored 25 points and made five 3-pointers. In three career first-round games, he has averaged 30.0 points per game with 19 3-pointers.
“As a senior, there is so much motivation with me and all of our seniors to keep this ride going,” Doherty said. “It has been an unbelievable last three months. We are going to push and do what we can to keep winning.
“Defense will be the key for us. We have to be solid and not gamble, and let the defense lead to our offense getting out in transition.”
Brody Martin added 15 points, and Charlie Skoff had 10 to lead the Cavaliers.
Salisbury lost to Allentown Central Catholic, 33-32, in the District 11 semifinals and won the third-place game against North Schuylkill, 51-42.
The Falcons are coming off a 54-45 win over West Philadelphia. Steven Lozada scored 25 points, and Drew Petrie had 10 in the program’s first state-playoff win since 2001.
Scranton Prep defeated Salisbury, 99-46, in the first round of the 2017 Class 4A playoffs.
