MUHLENBERG TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A Berks County-based snack maker is expanding its reach. Unique Snacks will begin selling some of its pretzel varieties in Walmart stores.

“So, the original Splits will always be a top in my mind, but the new mini sourdough Knead ‘Ems I think is my new favorite right now,” said Justin Spannuth, Unique Snacks Vice President and COO.

Spannuth has spent his entire life around pretzels, even inventing some new snack ideas along the way. He says the company has always stuck to its standards.

“For the entirety of our company, we always made very simple ingredient pretzels,” said Spannuth. “Our differentiation comes from time, temperature and the science of the process.”

The brand is already sold in retailers all across the region and even some nationwide, but Spannuth and his team wanted to continue to share their snacks with more people.

The company is continuing to expand in its 105th year of operations and soon three of the company’s signature products will be sold in more than 450 Walmart stores.

“Having the right story, having the right data and being able to tie together the network of distribution to get into the stores we got into; it took years,” explained Spannuth. “The sales team has done a great job on pushing this effort and getting it across the finish line.”

They’re approved for Original Splits, Extra Dark Splits and Mini Sourdough Knead ‘Ems. As the boss said, some of his personal favorites, but it’s just a start.

“We have a lot to prove,” added Spannuth. “Getting the yes, getting the product on shelf, is step one.”

He says the products will speak for themselves.

Spannuth says the company is already pushing capacity before it will need to install more equipment, but they’re up for the challenge.
