With the upcoming opening of Special Blends Café by JPII later this summer, the John Paul II Center for Special Learning is strengthening its Transition Program to expand real-world learning opportunities for students. Effective immediately, Rene Berkhammer has been promoted to Director of Transition, and Dr. Andrea Swift joins the program as Transition Coordinator.

Berkhammer has been a dedicated member of the JPII team for 20 years, working closely with students in the Transition Program to help them develop skills for greater independence and employment. As Director of Transition, she will lead the program’s continued growth, including expanded opportunities for hands-on learning through initiatives such as Special Blends Café by JPII. Her commitment to empowering students and fostering community connections will help guide the program as it prepares students for life beyond the classroom.

Dr. Andrea Swift joins JPII as Transition Coordinator, bringing more than two decades of experience in special education, transition planning, and post-secondary accessibility. In this role, she will collaborate with students and staff to implement individualized transition plans, support skill development, and expand opportunities for meaningful, real-world experience. Prior to joining JPII, Dr. Swift served as Director of Accessibility Services at Alvernia University and previously taught secondary special education at an urban middle and high school. She holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Special Education.

“As we prepare to open Special Blends Café, expanding our Transition Program allows us to provide even more opportunities for students to build confidence, develop job skills, and connect with the community,” said Kaylee Simcik, principal of the John Paul II Center for Special Learning. “Rene’s leadership and dedication, combined with Dr. Swift’s experience and enthusiasm, will help ensure our students continue to thrive as they prepare for life beyond JPII.”
