Elaine C Geroulo, Esq., leads with kindness in every thought, word and action. “Strength lies in empathy, and even the smallest act of goodwill can create ripples of positive change in the world. When you choose kindness, you not only uplift others but also nurture peace within yourself,” explains the attorney at law and sole practitioner of her business Elaine Geroulo Law, Scranton.
As the general practitioner in her firm she specializes in estate planning and criminal defense, with other concentrations that include real estate transactions, social security disability and juvenile law.
As an estate lawyer, her responsibilities include drafting wills, preparing powers of attorney and healthcare directives, minimizing estate taxes, guiding families through the probate process, and advising executors on their legal duties.
As a criminal defense attorney, she provides competent, ethical and confidential representation advocating passionately on her client’s behalf.
Geroulo graduated from Loyola College, Maryland, and pursued her law degree at Widener University School of Law, Harrisburg campus. She was sworn into the Lackawanna County Bar in 1997, and will celebrate her 30th year in practice in 2027.
Her mentor has been her father, the Honorable Vito P. Geroulo, Lackawanna County Judge Court of Common Pleas, who retired in December 2025.
“His leading by example throughout his career from public defender to judge, he has shown unwavering integrity, making decisions based on fairness and principle rather than pressure or popularity. He demonstrates deep compassion, remembering that behind every case are real people whose lives are impacted by the law. His balance of strength, honesty and empathy continues to inspire me to act with kindness and treat others with respect,” she notes.
The attorney attributes her success to believing that the law is one of the most powerful tools to protect and advocate for others during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. “While building my private practice, I faced my own personal challenges and made a conscious commitment to change. With the help of the extraordinary recovery community in NEPA, I achieved long-term sobriety, and feel comfortable speaking openly about my journey with the hope to help reduce stigma and model long-term professional success in recovery,” she said.
As a lawyer in recovery, she says she is uniquely positioned to serve the community with both professional skill and live empathy. She has provided pro bono or low-cost legal support for issues that commonly impact people in recovery, such as employment barriers and navigation of the criminal system which are likely and common consequences presented to a newly sober individual.
“My own life experience has allowed for deeper empathy for people facing legal problems. As someone who has faced my own personal fears, I have found that I recognize those emotions in others when helping them to navigate legal processes, whether they are facing criminal charges or negotiating with the emotions that surround the death of a loved one,” she adds, “My perspective inspires me to listen without judgment and appreciate that legal issues arise from complex life circumstances rather than simple right-or-wrong choices.”
Geroulo made the deliberate decision to return to her hometown after schooling in Baltimore and Harrisburg even though employment at a large law firm could have been more lucrative. “I love what I do, my career choice is not just a profession, but a meaningful way to serve and strengthen my community,” concludes the attorney.
