So far, $54 million has already been committed to public charging stations across the Commonwealth through the NEVI program. Pennsylvania has already constructed 30 charging stations – so far, the largest number of NEVI-funded installations in the country. There are currently another 53 stations in various stages of planning and construction.

“These projects will expand access to electric vehicle charging from our alternative fuel connections and bridge the gap between long-distance travel and community-based chargers,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “This is a critical step to improving relatability and access to meet the needs of EV drivers in the Commonwealth.”

The Community Charging phase of the NEVI programme was launched last month in February 2026, directing $100 million in federal funds to public EV infrastructure across Pennsylvania.

Funding for public charging in the USA is caught between the states and the federal government under the Trump administration. In its press statement, the Pennsylvania government noted that the federal Department of Transportation is currently withholding Congressionally-apportioned funding “that would have supported EV charging construction in Pennsylvania and created new, good-paying jobs.” This prompted Governor Josh Shapiro to sue the Trump Administration, as well as joining forces with 15 other states over the summer, resulting in the NEVI program being successfully reinstated. Even so, public infrastructure for electric vehicles still faces opposition from the Trump administration.

The NEVI programme funds up to 80% of eligible project costs for EV chargers along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors. To be eligible, the stations must be “non-proprietary, allow for open-access payment methods, be publicly available or available to authorised commercial motor vehicle operators from more than one company.”

Further funding for NEVI Community Charging can be applied for in the southeastern region, with funding applications now open. PennDOT is also striving to provide clear, fact-based information to help demystify electric vehicles with a video series.
