The balance of power in both U.S. Congress and the state Legislature are at stake in November — along with governor of Pennsylvania — and candidates are lining up for their chance to get on the ballot.
Nominating petitions were due Tuesday in Harrisburg for the upcoming May primary election.
Lehigh Valley Democrats will see contested primaries in five races: the 7th Congressional District, 16th state Senate district in Lehigh and Bucks counties, 18th state Senate district in Northampton County, and the 22nd and 187th state House districts in Lehigh County. Republicans will vote in a contested primary for lieutenant governor.
Pennsylvania is a closed primary state, meaning only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote for candidates of their respective parties.
The primary is May 19. The last day to register to vote, update your party status or make other registration changes is May 4. The deadline to request mail-in or absentee ballots is May 12.

Here are the candidates who filed nominating petitions. Challenges to petitions must be filed by Tuesday, March 17.
