NFL writer Andrew Peters of Bleacher Report thinks the Pittsburgh Steelers should be considered a landing spot for a 27-year-old quarterback.
Who is the player, you ask? It’s former Steelers starting quarterback Justin Fields, who is expected to get released by the New York Jets this offseason.

“Given how last season went, it’s easy to forget that Fields played well for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 before Russell Wilson got healthy and assumed the starting role,” Peters wrote. “He led the Steelers to a 4-2 start and had 1,106 passing yards and 10 total touchdowns during that stretch.
“Pittsburgh is still waiting on a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but even if the veteran returns, it will likely be a one-year deal that will end with him retiring. Fields could serve as a solid backup and potentially earn the starting role in 2027.”
The Steelers acquired Fields from the Chicago Bears in the offseason of 2024. Fields started six games for Pittsburgh in 2024 before getting benched for Russell Wilson. The Ohio State product threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception and ran for 289 yards and five touchdowns.
Pittsburgh signed future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers last offseason. Meanwhile, Fields replaced Rodgers in New York and struggled mightily. It’s unknown if Rodgers will retire or continue playing next season.

Fields is owed $10 million guaranteed by the Jets next season and the salary-cap savings for cutting him would be only $1 million against a $22 million dead-cap charge.
Fields has 9,039 passing yards, 52 passing touchdowns, 32 interceptions, 2,892 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns in the NFL. He will likely be a backup/gadget QB for the rest of his career. The Steelers could use Fields’ legs in the red zone, especially if Rodgers returns.
After all, Fields is one of the fastest runners in the league, while Rodgers isn’t that mobile anymore.
A future Hall of Famer, Rodgers finished with 3,322 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2025. He completed 65.7% of his passes.
