WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — At the Starlight Academy for Metaphysical Studies in West Pittston, Wednesday evening, Somatic Belly Dance Classes put a low-impact twist on fitness, using music-driven movement and rhythmic vibrations through the body.

Organizers say the activity can reduce stress and improve balance, strength, digestion, coordination and confidence, and they describe it as a fun and important exercise for women’s health.

Class leader Sandy Rukstalis said the sessions are designed to be accessible for all ages and body types, with participants only doing what their bodies allow.

Rukstalis said interest has grown, prompting the class to expand from once a month to twice a month.

“The class has been greatly received. It enhances your mood. The music is fun. The movements are fun. We laugh, we make jokes, we shimmy it up, and it’s a lot of fun. The people who come to this class love it,” said Rukstalis.

She added she has been belly dancing since her 20s and previously danced with a troupe, later turning to teaching as she got older.

Starlight Academy for Metaphysical Studies describes its mission as offering educational experiences for adults exploring metaphysical concepts and practices, with programs that include intuitive development, meditations, reiki sessions, workshops, and retreats.

The price for Somatic Belly Dance Classes is $10 cash only, and parking is in the rear of the building.
