Kyler Murray is officially a free agent.

The Arizona Cardinals released him this afternoon but are still on the hook for his contract, which means any team can now sign him for the league minimum.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are considered a top contender to sign him. As of Wednesday afternoon, they had the second-best odds of signing Murray at Polymarket, behind only the Minnesota Vikings.

The Steelers are still awaiting a decision from Aaron Rodgers, who has yet to decide if or where he wants to play next season. He recently implied on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he wants to return to Pittsburgh after enjoying his time there last season, but the two sides don’t appear close to a deal at the moment.

The Steelers could still try to sign Murray as an insurance option in case Rodgers doesn’t come back, as their current alternatives are Will Howard and Mason Rudolph. They should probably pursue Murray regardless, as he’ll be cheaper and much younger than Rodgers.

They’ll likely have stiff competition from the Vikings, however, who are looking for a veteran after J.J. McCarthy’s struggles last season. So if Pittsburgh’s front office wants Murray, it better act fast.
