West Scranton senior Roy Ayala had the best 100-yard breaststroke race of his career and qualified for the B final at the PIAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
Ayala posted a time of 56.97 seconds in the preliminary heats. That far surpassed his District 2 time and school mark of 58.20. It was also the 11th fastest swim of the morning races and put him in the consolation final.
Williamsport junior Evan Summers, who beat Ayala at the District 2-4 Class 3A subregional, had the fastest qualifying time of 53.77.
The boys’ evening session starts at 4:30 p.m. The girls’ finals are at 7 p.m.
Abington Heights senior Jason Casper wrapped up his individual-event career by finishing 25th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.59. Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Cinco Perez had the top qualifying time of 4:27.05.
Abington Heights’ Derek Williams finished 31st in the 100 free with a time of 48.87. Upper St. Clair senior Nazar Zoukovski had the top qualifying time of 44.80. Upper Dublin’s Brady Manser, the 50 free champion, was disqualified.
Abington Heights senior Geoff Stanton finished 31st in the 100 backstroke. He had a time of 55.74. Unionville’s Grant Fleming was the top qualifier with a time of 47.84.
