We have continuing coverage tonight on the situation at Jefferson Elementary School.

The Erie School District’s administrative building was packed with parents, residents and students during a lengthy school board meeting, where community members voiced concerns about school safety and how administrators handled a recent incident involving a teacher and a classroom panic alarm.

The board opened the meeting by addressing the situation at Jefferson Elementary. Superintendent Dr. Natalyn Gibbs spoke about the incident early in the meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Natalyn Gibbs also addressed the public, saying in part, “As I said before, improving the working conditions for our staff directly impacts the learning conditions for our students.”

Some parents questioned how the administration responded to the situation, while others expressed support for the superintendent and the teachers involved.

One Jefferson Elementary parent told us they believe the situation has been ongoing.

Another parent, Jay Breneman — who also serves as the Erie School Board president and says he has a second-grader at Jefferson — said incidents like this can occur in any school. He added that moments like this highlight the importance of leadership and communication within the district.

Breneman said he believes the situation could represent a turning point for the school district.

During the meeting, the board also discussed the possibility of creating a new position focused on addressing school-related concerns and feedback from parents. Topics raised by community members included cellphone use in schools, artificial intelligence in learning, and overall student safety.
