READING, Pa. – The Reading Rebels are a professional basketball team that competes in the United States Basketball League. Their home opener is Friday.
A familiar face to Berks County is on the team this year in Travaun Coad.
Coad is a graduate of Wilson West Lawn High School, where he finished his career with more than 1,000 points.
He later continued his career at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
But in 2024, Coad tore his Achilles for the second time in his career. That recovery process can take almost a year.
Now, he’s looking to make a comeback with the Rebels this season.
Destiny Sanchez stopped by practice yesterday to catch up with Coad this week on how eager he is to get back onto the hardwood this season.
“It’s mental. It’s a mental battle for the most part, but I had a good people, good family around me, you know, friends, family” Coad said.
“And then, you know, John was here to pick me up, you know, coaches there, everybody checked in on me and just day by day at work. I’m just happy to be around basketball, you know, with the two torn Achilles, you know, it’s a big setback. It’s a year recovery. So it happened two times in five years. So I’m just happy to be back around basketball and to be in the city of basketball and just be able to perform again.
