West Scranton senior Roy Ayala closed out his high school career, finishing 14th in the 100-yard breaststroke on Day 2 of the PIAA Class 3A Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday night at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

Ayala had a time of 57.32 seconds, racing in the B final. He qualified for the race with a school-record time of 56.97. Both clockings were improvements on his school record of 58.20.

Abington Heights senior Derek Williams was the only other athlete who competed in an evening session race in the Class 3A meet. He finished 14th in the 50 freestyle on Wednesday.

Abington Heights teammate Micah White finished 16th in diving.

Williamsport junior Evan Summers, who beat Ayala at the District 2-4 Class 3A subregional, won the silver medal in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.25. Summers had the fastest qualifying time of 53.77, but La Salle College senior Kyle Spaman won the gold in the final with a time of 53.81.

Ayala, a four-year member of the West Scranton team, will graduate owning the school record in seven of the eight individual events, with the only one he doesn’t hold being the 500 free.

Abington Heights senior Jason Casper wrapped up his individual-event career by finishing 25th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.59. Wissahickon senior Reed Harris won the gold in the final with a time of 4:22.43.

In addition to his 50 freestyle performance, Williams finished 31st in the 100 free with a time of 48.87. Upper St. Clair senior Nazar Zoukovski, who had the top qualifying time of 44.80, won the gold with a time of 44.19. Upper Dublin’s Brady Manser, the 50 free champion, was disqualified in the preliminary heats.

Abington Heights senior Geoff Stanton finished 31st in the 100 backstroke. He had a time of 55.74. Unionville’s Grant Fleming earned the gold with a time of 47.24.

Girls

The season wrapped up in the morning qualifying session for the girls at the state meet.

Hazleton Area’s Lia Ochs had a time of 5:12.61, which improved on her District 2 time of 5:14.39, and she placed 25th in the 500 freestyle. North Allegheny senior Claire Bacu had the top qualifying time of 4:55.06.

Tunkhannock freshman Kaitlyn Keown finished 29th in the 100 backstroke. She had a time of 1:01.36. Fox Chapel’s Delaney O’Toole clocked a top time of 54.46.

Abington Heights sophomore Hadley Pallman finished 30th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 55.28. State College senior Molly Workman posted the fastest time for the event with a 49.13.

Abington Heights sophomore Katie Giermanski finished 30th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.71. Kelsey McPeek of Parkland had the fastest qualifying time of 1:02.65.

Pallman and Giermanski joined Gianna Vachino and Ella Bannon on the Lady Comets’ 400 free relay team that finished 30th with a time of 3:50.40. State College had the top qualifying time of 3:25.83.
