Driverless shuttles could replace traditional parking lot buses at Pittsburgh International Airport under a multimillion-dollar proposal that will enter a public comment period beginning Sunday.

Public comments will be accepted on a proposed autonomous vehicle shuttle that would move travelers from parking areas at the Findlay airport to the terminal through fixed guideways, according to a report provided by PennDOT and the Allegheny County Airport Authority. It would replace the current system of shuttle buses operated by drivers.

The multi-million dollar proposal would require the construction of additional infrastructure including new stations, a bridge to connect to the terminal and the guided track with magnets, according to the report. The amount of passengers the automated vehicles could carry depends on the type of luggage they bring, ranging from 12 to 22 passengers.

Officials said the proposed shuttle would be the first of its kind at a U.S. airport.

Public comment starts Sunday and continues until April 14. Comments can be submitted through an online form at pa.gov/p3comment or by email to ra-pdpitenhancements@pa.gov.

Comments can also be mailed to PennDOT P3 Office, 400 North St., 6th Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17120.
