The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a public consultation period on a proposed autonomous shuttle project at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Members of the public will be able to submit comments from 15 March to 14 April 2026.

The proposal has been put forward by the Allegheny County Airport Authority, which would act as the project sponsor. The authority would be responsible for developing and operating an automated shuttle system designed to transport passengers between landside parking areas, airport facilities and the planned landside terminal at the airport.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Office of Public-Private Partnerships (P3), the project would involve a dedicated guideway for driverless vehicles carrying passengers within the airport complex.

PennDOT and the airport authority have prepared a detailed analysis of the proposal. The document outlines the potential location of the system, the type of transport service planned, estimated project costs and the possible duration of any contract. It also considers potential social, economic and environmental effects, along with relevant federal and state legal requirements and alternative ways of delivering the project compared with the proposed public-private partnership model.

Under Pennsylvania’s public-private partnership legislation, PennDOT is required to make the project analysis available for public review before the state’s P3 Board considers the proposal. The analysis and related documents will be accessible during the consultation period through the state’s online P3 comment portal.

Comments may be submitted online, by email or by post to the PennDOT P3 Office in Harrisburg. Submissions must be received by 14 April to be included in the consultation.

Feedback from the public will be collected and summarised before any decision is taken by the P3 Board regarding the project.
