Lukas Iannone had a school-record-setting morning, and the Scranton Prep girls are in position to have a heavy medal haul at the PIAA Class 2A Swimming and Diving Championships.

Iannone, a senior at Scranton Prep who is committed to The College of the Holy Cross, had the second-fastest swim in the preliminary races for the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday. He clocked at 1 minute, 54.31 seconds to better his District 2 Class 2A winning time of 1:54.81 at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.

Northgate senior Sam Cavanaugh had the top time in the qualifying with a 1:50.90.

The top eight times from the preliminary session advanced to the championship final. The second group of eight reached the B final. The boys’ finals and consolation races are at 4:30 p.m. The girls race at 7:05 p.m.

While Iannone had the best individual performance in the morning races among Lackawanna League swimmers, the Scranton Prep girls’ team stood out across the entire session.

Rebecca Oakes posted a qualifying time of 58.31 to advance with the fourth-best effort in the 100 butterfly, while North Pocono freshman Alexandra Johnson advanced to the B final of the 100 fly with the 14th-best time of 1:00. 53. Hampton senior Lainey Sheets had the best time of 54.39.

Ella Schofield had a major drop in time in the 200 individual medley with a 2:11.47 to qualify fifth for the championship final. She crushed her District 2 time of 2:11.47.

Dallas freshman Locklynn Bienkowski, the District 2 champion, qualified with the second-best time of 2:08.27. Shady Side Academy junior Ava Jochims had the top time of 2:01.76.

Scranton Prep’s 200 medley relay team had the second-fastest time of 1:48.91. Shady Side Academy was just ahead with a time of 1:48.20. Scranton Prep’s 200 free relay team had the fifth-best qualifying time of 1:41.08. Franklin Regional clocked the fastest time of 1:38.74.

Overall, it was a successful morning for District 2 athletes.

Tunkhannock senior Jaden Baltrusaitis also qualified for the final in the 50 freestyle with the second-best time of 21.16. His teammate Kyle Kozloski is also in the final with the fourth-best time of 21.25. Donegal junior Colton Houck had a time of 20.98.

Tunkhannock’s 200 free relay had the fastest qualifying time of 1:26.07, and its 200 medley relay had the sixth-best time of 1:38.84.

Scranton Prep’s team reached the B final with a time of 1:41.87, which was the 15th-best of the preliminary heats.

Holy Cross sophomore Leo Cholish finished 18th in the 100 fly with a time of 53.80 that improved on his District 2 time of 54.28.

Scranton Prep’s Ben Kessler finished 19th in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.62, Dallas’ Chase Kresge was 25th (1:49.60), and Tunkhannock’s Braydon Christopher was 31st (1:52.49).

Dallas senior Nico Wilk finished 28th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.66 and 32nd in the 100 fly (57.83).

Holy Cross senior Simon Madore finished 19th in the 50 free (22.19).

Dallas finished 17th (1:31.38), and Lake-Lehman was 19th (1:31.61) in the 200 free relay. Scranton Prep’s team was disqualified.

Girls

Dallas freshman Macie Stauffer advanced into the championship final of the 200 free with the eighth-best time of 1:56.75. Schuylkill Valley junior Mabel Walborn had the top time of 1:52.77.

The Dallas 200 medley relay team is in the B final with a 1:51.27 that was 10th-best in qualifying.

Elk Lake senior Brynn Warriner had a time of 24.98 in the 50 free and finished 18th overall. Scranton Prep’s Sophia Galko was 31st (25.77).

Elk Lake’s 200 free relay team finished 17th, just missing the B final with a time of 1:44.54.

Dallas’ Maria-Lucia Priore finished 31st in the 100 fly (1:03.44).
