Calvin Austin III signed with John Harbaugh and the New York Giants on Thursday, leaving the team that drafted him four years ago. With his departure, he issued a goodbye to the city of Pittsburgh, the Steelers organization, and the fans.
“After 4 incredible years in Pittsburgh, it’s time to turn the page,” Austin wrote on Instagram. “To the Steelers organization, my teammates, coaches, and especially the fans, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You took a kid who had only ever known Memphis and made Pittsburgh feel like home. The love, support, memories, and brotherhood we built together mean more than I can express. Just really grateful for every moment on and off the field. Pittsburgh will always have a special place in my heart. Blessed beyond measure.”
Austin was taken in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft to inject much-needed speed into the Steelers’ offense. There were reports that the Baltimore Ravens—set to pick right after the Steelers—let out an audible groan in their draft room after their division rival stole Austin away. Now four years later, Harbaugh is with the Giants and gets a chance to work with the speedy receiver.
With a foot injury robbing him of his rookie season, Austin also dealt with quarterback instability and scheme changes throughout his time in Pittsburgh. In two seasons under Arthur Smith’s system, he had 67 receptions for 920 yards and seven TDs, but it still never felt like the Steelers maximized his talent. Perhaps promising young QB Jaxon Dart and the up-and-coming Giants offense can provide his career with a second wind.
Despite a smaller role than he probably imagined for himself, Austin never once complained or caused any issues in Pittsburgh. In fact, he was viewed by many as the leader of the WR room over the last few years. Roman Wilson was quick to point to Austin as the top guy when he joined the team two years ago.
New York is getting a good one.
