Devoted and beloved husband of 66 years to Shirley A. Sagan, father of Christopher Sagan (Peggy), MaryJoy Nolan (Mark), PaPa to Christopher Sagan Jr. (Beth), Peter T. Sagan, Peter Nolan (Jen), Victoria Nolan and great-granddaughter Winter Sagan. He is also survived by his brother Thomas F. Sagan, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter P. and Helen Sehra Sagan, daughter Jennifer Jo Sagan, and brothers Albert, Theodore, Eugene and Richard.
Born in Scranton, PA and raised in Dunmore, PA, he was lovingly known as Poochie and Pete to his brothers, friends and family. Growing up, he loved learning all he could from his dad as far back as he could remember. He admired his mom for her cooking and all she did to keep their home running with six boys. He was raised with and always had a strong Catholic faith.
A graduate of Dunmore High School, he enjoyed playing four years of football for the Bucks and later in life going to the games with family. He earned a full football scholarship to Michigan State University and was a member of the team that won the Rose Bowl in 1956, defeating UCLA. While it was his athletic talent that got him to MSU, he always felt it was an honor to be a student there where he studied Industrial Arts.
For 39 years, Peter enjoyed teaching woodshop and drafting. He began his career living in Medford Lakes, NJ for 12 years with his wife Shirley and their three children, teaching at Riverside HS, Edgewood HS, and Rancocas HS. During that time Peter also offered free woodshop classes to neighborhood children. After moving back to the countryside of NE PA, he taught at Montrose HS until retirement. During his retirement years, Peter, along with Shirley, loved spending winters in Florida with family and friends.
He was very proud of all he built by himself, including the expansion of their home in Medford Lakes, and transforming their original small farm home into a beautiful colonial in North Abington Twp. He also built an antique shop that he and his wife Shirley ran together for many years, while also stripping and refinishing furniture as a business. For his children he added onto the barn horse stalls and made a horse riding rink for their 4H competitive riding years. He built numerous pieces of furniture and helped relatives and friends with his skills.
Peter loved his family and was always there for encouragement and support. He enjoyed attending his childrens and grandchildrens activities, sports and adventures. He also loved being a part of the planning of the large Sagan family reunions. Always a humble person, Peter enjoyed life, loved talking to people and making them laugh. He found beauty and gratitude in the simplest things.
A private Mass of Christian Burial and interment will be held by the family.
In memory of Peter, plant a tree, be a mentor, share kindness and laughter, show gratitude and love.
Peter P. Sagan, Jr.
