After a fire was reported inside an apartment building on Erie’s east side, 18 people were displaced. That building was deemed uninhabitable by an Erie code enforcement officer.
Firefighters were called to the 500 block of East 6th Street around 3:20 p.m. on March 13.
In response, the American Red Cross Northwestern Pennsylvania Chapter opened an emergency shelter at the Multicultural Community Resource Center to temporarily house the residents.
The Red Cross provided a place to sleep, food and other supplies and services free of charge to those who were affected by the situation.
“Nobody wants to be outside in 35 degrees with wind gusts of 58 miles an hour. It’s not safe,” said Geoffrey Domowicz, the community disaster program manager for American Red Cross Greater Pennsylvania. “We try to work with those clients who are displaced because of a disaster, that’s the Red Cross mission.”
To support the Red Cross mission, Domowicz said monetary donations are the most beneficial resource to help them supply aid to those in need.
